What is the rule in law that says all court cases must have happen and the parties must be directly affected?

I remember learning about a clause (it could be in the Constitution) that in United States Law all court cases must have actually happened, and the parties (defendant and prosecutor) must be directly connected. Does anyone know where it can be found? Does it apply to criminal law or civil law or both?

I need to write a case brief for a class & I dont know of any major prison court cases. There are a few in our book, but we cant write our briefs on them. I tryed searching Yahoo & found nothing. Anyone know where I can find prison cases?

I’m preparing to call Verizon Customer Support in an attempt to use the material adverse clause of the customer agreement to get out of our contract without an early termination fee. Since people have done this before, and have probably taken it to court as well, I’d like to find past court cases dealing with this for use when I’m talking to Customer Support.
